Call for Papers: ENTANGLED SEASCAPES: MORE-THAN-HUMAN HISTORIES ACROSS OCEANIC WORLDS
22–23 January 2026
Academia Belgica, Rome
From the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean, from the South China Sea to the Pacific and the Atlantic, this conference invites scholars to explore the sea as an active, more-than-human agent that shapes and is shaped by human and nonhuman actors. We invite papers that rethink histories of civilisation, encounters, and sovereignties from ocean‑centred perspectives that challenge dominant land-based narratives that have long informed historiography. Deadline for abstracts (350 words): 15 September 2025Send to: Matthew Cobb, University of Wales Trinity Saint David m.cobb@uwtsd.ac.uk & Daniela De Simone, Universiteit Gent 🏛️ daniela.desimone@ugent.beAs one of the convenors, I look forward to bringing together scholars from across disciplines to engage with the oceans as dynamic, more‑than‑human worlds. This perspective is central to my research on marginal landscapes and marginalised communities inhabiting these space. Through the 🐃 Nilgiri Archaeological Project, I study the histories of South Indian upland forest communities, often overlooked in mainstream narratives yet rich in entangled stories that connect people, ecologies, and the more-than-human.Let’s meet in Rome to share perspectives, build networks, and rethink how we write histories!
